NEW YORK STATE NOT-FOR-PROFIT POST-SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION OR NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION WITH STRONG TIES TO ONE OR MORE POST-SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Stem Cell Research
The New York State Department of Health invites eligible applicants to submit applications for summer internship programs that create opportunities for undergraduates to conduct research in the rapidly advancing field of stem cell biology; to deepen their understanding of the field and learn specialized techniques under the guidance of an experienced stem cell investigator; and to foster their appreciation of the broader context in which stem cell research occurs, including related cultural, historical, clinical and ethical issues.
Applicant institutions are expected to provide undergraduate students with a summer research experience that will stimulate them to consider career opportunities in stem cell-related research, and to maintain the capacity of New York State's biomedical research community to contribute in a meaningful way to the discovery and application of stem cell science.
NYSTEM, a program of the New York State Department of Health, whose purpose is to administer stem cell research funding based on recommendations and advice from the Empire State Stem Cell Board, will be making approximately 10 awards. The number of awards made will be contingent upon the quality of applications submitted and the availability of funds. Awards will be made in amounts up to $75,000 per year in direct costs, plus Facilities and Administrative costs of up to eight percent of the modified total direct costs for a period up to three years.
ELIGIBLE RECIPIENTS: The applicant must be a New York State not-for-profit post-secondary educational institution or not-for-profit organization with strong ties to one or more post-secondary educational institutions. Organizations awarded funds must have the ability to monitor funds, maintain individual accounts and fulfill other fiscal management criteria. Two or more institutions, at least one of which is located in New York State, may apply as a consortium to maximize institutional resources committed to the program. If a consortium includes institutions from outside New York State, a New York State institution must serve as the lead applicant and accept primary responsibility for the application and subsequent contractual agreements. However, an institution may participate in only one application.
APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH: June 1, 2009. The projected contract start date is May 1, 2010.
This RFA, including application forms, has been posted on the Department of Health's public website at http://www.nyhealth.gov/funding/

Applications will be accepted by the New York State Department of Transportation's, Public Transportation Bureau, for Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) and New Freedom projects in non-urbanized areas of the state with population of less than 50,000.
The JARC formula grant funds are for the improvement of access to transportation services to employment sites and employment related activities for welfare recipients and eligible low-income individuals. Also, JARC is intended to transport residents of urbanized areas and non-urbanized areas to suburban employment opportunities. Such services may include, but are not limited to: adding late night and weekend service, mobility management, expansion of current fixed route transit services, and ridesharing and carpooling activities.
The New Freedom formula grant program aims to reduce barriers to transportation services and expand the transit options available to people with disabilities seeking integration into the workforce and full participation in society. The New Freedom funding are available for services beyond those required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, designed to assist individuals with disabilities access to transportation, including transportation to and from jobs and employment related activities. Some example projects include: Expansion of paratransit service beyond current ADA limitation i.e. ¾ mile beyond, travel training for users on awareness, knowledge and skills to navigate available transit in their communities, accessibility improvements for non-key stations and support of mobility management.
Both funding sources require that services be identified in a Locally Developed Coordinated Human Service and Public Transportation Plan and be coordinated with other federally-assisted programs to ensure efficient use of federal funds. The total combined funds available for FFY 2007, 2008 is JARC ($1,265,534) and New Freedom is ($1,160,301).
To be eligible to apply for JARC and New Freedom funding, applicants must be either a State/Local government authority, a Private non-profit agency registered with the NYS Department of State or a Private or Public operator of public transportation services.
