LOCAL GOVERNMENT ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES
Federal Highway Safety Program
The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) is issuing a Request for Application (RFA) to solicit applications from local government enforcement agencies for Federal Highway Safety grants for Corridor Enforcement. Grant applications must be received by the GTSC on or before January 30th, 2008.
The GTSC oversees New York State's highway safety program and receives funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to address highway safety related problems. The goal of the program is to prevent motor vehicle crashes, save lives, and reduce the severity of injuries suffered in crashes on the state's roadways. The GTSC distributes these funds to state agencies, local governments and qualifying not-for-profit agencies through a grant award program. Corridor Enforcement Grants are awarded for one-year periods. To qualify for funding, the enforcement agency must have jurisdiction in a traffic safety corridor (described below). The NYS Department of Transportation uses accident records to identify high crash corridors throughout the state. These high crash locations can be attributed to the actions of drivers engaging in aggressive driving related behaviors.
To aid in the selection of the corridors, crash data and aggressive driving Priority Incident Locations are mapped using GIS software. The NYSDOT Regions use the maps and coordinate with the State Police to make their final selections.
Local police departments that have jurisdiction within these high-crash corridors are invited to participate in the program and apply for grant funding to support their increased enforcement activities.
The locations of the corridors for this announcement are:
