RECOGNIZING WEATHERFORD’S SPACE–RELATED HISTORY
A Resolution recognizing Weatherford's space-related history; and naming Weatherford the Space City of Oklahoma.
WHEREAS, Weatherford is the hometown of NASA astronaut Thomas P. Stafford, who served as commander of the Apollo 10 mission and flew six rendezvous in space, logging more than 507 hours of space flight during his career; and
WHEREAS, the Stafford Air and Space Museum in Weatherford showcases flown aircraft, full-scale replicas of famous planes and spacecraft, and an educational center, among other attractions; and
WHEREAS, the City of Weatherford, its residents, community organizations, and volunteers are committed to promoting tourism during and beyond the statewide Route 66 Centennial Celebration in 2026; and
WHEREAS, Weatherford's prime location along Route 66 will largely increase tourism during the Route 66 Centennial, providing countless opportunities to showcase the city and state's space-related history.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
THAT the Oklahoma State Senate recognizes Weatherford's rich history related to space.
THAT the Oklahoma State Senate designates Weatherford as the official “Space City of Oklahoma”.
Adopted by the Senate the 23rd day of April, 2024.
