RECOGNIZING HOCHATOWN AS AN IMPORTANT HISTORICAL TOWN AND PRESENT–DAY TOURISM DESTINATION
A Resolution recognizing Hochatown as an important historical town and present-day tourism destination in McCurtain County and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
WHEREAS, Hochatown was settled in the 1830s on the banks of what is today the Mountain Fork River by a group of Choctaw Indians newly arrived over the Trail of Tears, one family of which was named Hocha; and
WHEREAS, in 1894, a post office was established, which at its peak served 175 families; and
WHEREAS, Hochatown is recognized as a historic community of people residing in compact form continuously since the settlement was established, both prior to and after relocation to the west by the United States government in order to establish Broken Bow Reservoir; and
WHEREAS, Hochatown has grown into an important tourist destination, bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars to the region, helping to vitalize an area that once had limited economic opportunities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 58TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
THAT the Oklahoma State Senate recognizes the historic community of Hochatown and its importance to the area and the community members dedicated to improving the lives of those therein.
