S.Res.No. 38
RECOGNIZING THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE VALLIANT CONTAINERBOARD MILL IN SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA—ITS IMPORTANCE TO THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES
A Resolution recognizing the economic impact of the Valliant Containerboard Mill in southeastern Oklahoma and its importance to the surrounding communities; and directing distribution.
WHEREAS, International Paper's Valliant Containerboard Mill began operations in 1971. When construction began, the mill was only expected to operate for 15 years as the local timber resources were not expected to last; and
WHEREAS, the Valliant Mill is now the largest employer in southeastern Oklahoma, providing 870 jobs to citizens in the area and successfully operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to produce containerboard used in the production of corrugated packaging; and
WHEREAS, as the largest paper mill in International Paper's fleet, the Valliant Mill improves the quality of life in the communities where their employees work and live; and
WHEREAS, the mill supports other jobs in the community, employing five additional individuals in supporting industries per paper mill employee including jobs in forestry, transportation, hospitality, and contracting; and
WHEREAS, the Valliant Mill makes direct investments in southeastern Oklahoma communities, having donated approximately $145,000 to schools, community organizations, civic groups, and local events in 2021; and
WHEREAS, the mill commits to sustainability by executing traditional strategies such as reusing old, corrugated containers in the fiber mix for new containerboard as well as innovative methods of turning excess bark into power and reusing water up to seven times within the paper making process. The amount of energy self-generated through this biomass process creates enough energy to power 45,000 homes; and
WHEREAS, the Valliant Containerboard Mill was recognized by the Idabel Chamber of Commerce as the Industry of the Year winner in 2021; and
WHEREAS, thanks to forestry initiatives and Oklahoma's valuable and thriving hardwood and loblolly pine forests, the mill completed its 50th year of continuous operations in 2021.
