Community Empowerment Grants for Aging in Place
The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) will accept applications through April 17, 2009 for a community empowerment initiative to support the process of enabling people/communities to choose and develop their own supportive services or other improvements to enable older persons to "age in place" and stay in their own neighborhoods. NYSOFA will issue a Request for Applications (RFA) on or about February 23, 2009. Awards will be made on a competitive basis to nonprofit agencies or local governments for the development of community empowerment programs. For the purposes of this funding opportunity, an older person is defined as an individual age 60 or older.
The following is a description of this initiative:
♦ $245,000 in total funding is available.
♦ Up to eight awards will be made for either the planning or implementation of innovative programs and activities that enhance community empowerment and provide opportunities for community participation in creating livable, age friendly communities.
♦ Awards for planning grants will not exceed $30,000; implementation grants will not exceed $75,000.
♦ It is a goal of NYSOFA to fund programs in different geographic areas of the state, subject to the availability of funding, and the application process will be structured with the intent to fund at least two programs that can effectively address the unique challenges facing rural communities.
♦ Only nonprofit and local government agencies may apply. We encourage multiple community agencies to participate in program planning and development; however, the lead agency must be a not-for-profit or governmental agency.
♦ Funding is available for planning and/or implementation of new initiatives and funds may not be used to supplant any existing public or private funding that a program currently receives.
♦ Funds will be awarded through contracts for a one-year period anticipated to begin September 1, 2009.
