54.6 Absence from duty; notification to the board; refresher passages.
(a) Whenever any pilot is absent from duty for any cause for more than 30 days, the pilot shall inform the board in writing or arrange for it to be informed of the reason for and the probable length of the absence.
(b) Any pilot who is away from duty for six or more months shall complete at least two passages over each route for which the pilot is licensed before resuming piloting duties. These refresher passages shall be completed as an observer in the company of an active State pilot who is licensed in the same or higher grade.
(c) Before resuming piloting activities, a pilot who has been absent from duty for six or more months shall submit to the board a list of completed refresher passages including the name, gross tonnage, and draft of each vessel in which the passages were completed. The list shall also include a description of each passage and the name of each pilot accompanied. A pilot may also be required to appear before the board prior to resumption of piloting duties.
