526.10 Inpatient nasogastric feeding procedures.
(a) General.
Nasogastric tubes may be used for feeding purposes in inpatient facilities when determined to be clinically appropriate, following consideration of all possible routes and types of nutrition administration.
(b) Conditions for use.
(1) The use of nasogastric feeding tubes shall be ordered by a physician.
(2) In selecting the size and type of nasogastric feeding tubes to be employed, staff shall make every effort to minimize patient discomfort.
(3) Unless otherwise ordered and clinically justified by a physician, the size of a nasogastric feeding tube used on an individual patient shall not exceed:
(i) 6 French if the patient's body weight is less 50 pounds;
(ii) 8 French if the patient's body weight is 50 pounds or more, but less than 100 pounds;
(iii) 12 French if the patient's body weight is 100 pounds or more.
