45-3.5 Special requirements for monorail and trough slides.
(a) Sleds.
(1) Brakes. Each sled shall be equipped with an easily operated braking system capable of stopping it on the steepest part of the slide.
(2) Lap belts. Unless exempted by the manufacturer, each sled shall be equipped with an adjustable lap belt for each passenger.
(3) Capacity. The capacity of each sled shall not exceed two persons.
(4) Positive engagement. Sleds on monorail slides shall be so engaged to the rail so as to prevent accidental dislodgement when negotiating a curve.
(5) Inspection. Each sled shall be inspected for damage, to the sled and its component parts, prior to each use. Damaged sleds shall be removed from service until repaired.
(b) Monorail and trough structures.
(1) Installation. The monorail and trough structures shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
(2) Modifications. Modifications to the systems shall be permitted only when made in accordance with the written instructions of the manufacturer.
(3) Turn protection. When there exists a danger of a sled leaving a slide on a turn, such locations shall be protected with bales of hay or other soft pliable materials capable of lessening the impact of a sled and its passengers.
(4) Starting zone. The monorail or trough shall have a starting zone at least 75 yards in length. The end of this zone shall be conspicuously marked with a paint stripe, flags or other markings. Not more than one sled shall be permitted in this zone at any time.
(c) Personnel.
(1) Slide supervisor. The slide supervisor shall have the following duties:
(i) overall responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the slide structure;
(ii) training of the slide starter and slide attendants in the duties and responsibilities of their assigned tasks.
(2) Slide starter. A slide starter shall be positioned at the start of each slide structure. This individual shall be responsible for the following:
(i) final instructions to passengers in the operation of the braking mechanism;
(ii) insuring that each passenger has secured the lap belt;
(iii) insuring that the preceding sled has cleared the starting zone before the next sled is permitted to travel down the slide.
(3) Slide attendants.
(i) Start of slide. At the start of the slide structure there shall be a minimum of two attendants, having the following responsibilities:
(a) at least one attendant shall remove the sleds from the tramway and inspect them for any damage;
(b) at least one attendant shall instruct the riders on how to operate the braking mechanism;
(c) one person may be designated to perform multiple duties.
(ii) Midpoint of slide. There shall be an attendant stationed near the midpoint of the slide structure whose responsibility shall be to instruct the riders to slow up or speed up in order to help avert rear end collisions.
(iii) End of slide. At the end of the slide structure there shall be a minimum of two attendants, having the following responsibilities:
(a) at least one attendant shall assist the riders in leaving their sleds and in removing the sleds from the track or trough;
(b) at least one attendant shall place the sleds on the tramway for the return trip to the start.
(c) Signs. The following signs shall be displayed in the areas indicated:
(1) Operating instructions and rules of conduct: A large, well maintained sign, containing the operation instructions and rules of conduct pertaining to the use of the slide, shall be displayed at or near the start of a slide.
(2) Caution signs indicating sharp curves or sudden changes in elevation shall be mounted adjacent to the slide immediately prior to the condition described on the signs.
(3) A sign stating “SLIDE ENDS - 250 FEET - BEGIN BRAKING” shall be mounted adjacent to the slide at the location indicated.
