Dear Mr. Schwing:
*1 Attorney General Mike Moore has received your letter of request and has assigned it to me for research and reply. Your letter asks:
*1 Does a sworn police officer have need of a permit to carry a weapon off duty?
*1 In response, Mississippi Code Annotated Section 45-9-101(14) exempts full-time law enforcement officers, chiefs of police, sheriffs and persons licensed as professional bondsmen pursuant to Chapter 39, Title 83, Mississippi Code of 1972, from the need to obtain a license in order to carry a concealed pistol or revolver. Therefore, a sworn police officer does not need a permit to carry a concealed weapon while off duty.
*1 If this office can be of any further assistance, please let us know.
Very truly yours,
*1 Mike Moore
