016.06.6-1100. MEDICATIONS
1101 SELF MEDICATION
Participants who are able to do so may keep and administer their own medicines while attending the ADHC program. They shall be supervised as necessary in administering their medications.
1102 MEDICATION BY STAFF MEMBER
If it is determined that a participant is unable to be responsible for self medication, the medicines must be kept for him/her during attendance at the facility and administered by the RN/LPN Health Care Coordinator at the prescribed time and dosage.
1103 SHARED MEDICATIONS
Under no circumstances will one participant's medication be shared by another.
1104 ORDERS FOR MEDICATION
No medications, either prescription or across the counter drugs, will be given without an order by the participant's physician or dentist.
1105 MEDICINE CONTAINERS
Each participant's medication, regardless of who administers it, shall be kept in the original container.
1106 MEDICINE LABELS
1106.1 Prescription medication must be clearly and properly labeled by the pharmacist.
1106.2 Across the counter medications must be labeled with the participants' name, the time, and dosage (i.e. “one tablespoon after meals”, or “one tablet P.R.N.”).
1107 MEDICINE STORAGE
1107.1 Each participant must have an individual container, bin, compartment or drawer for storage of his/her medications. This must be labeled with his/her name.
1107.2. The individual storage containers must be kept in a locked area (medicine cart, drawer, cabinet, etc.)
1107.3 Documentation of whether or not medications are kept by the facility must be included in each participant's file.
1108 STOCK MEDICATIONS
Stock supplies of any medicines are prohibited.
1109 CALIBRATED MEASURES
There shall be calibrated medicine containers to correctly measure liquid medications.
1110 MEDICAL WASTES
Disposable items shall not be reused. Disposable syringes and needles must be disposed of by medically approved means.
1111 REFUSED MEDICATION
It shall be documented in the participant's file any time a participant refuses his/her medications.
1111.1 The ADHC shall notify the family, caregiver and the legal guardian and the participant's physician, whener a participant refuses edications.
